Goosebumps Most Wanted #4: Frankenstein's Dog

Blurb
Kat is reluctant to visit her uncle Vic Frankenstein because of all the rumors about him. But Kat is relieved to find that even though he lives in a dark, old castle-like mansion, Uncle Vic is a quiet, gentle man, a scientist interested in building robots with artificial intelligence. Also, Kat loves Poochie, Vic's small, adorable, fluffy white dog. But after an accident occurs in her uncle's lab, strange things begin to happen. Has Kat created a monster? Or is something else responsible for the horror that is unleashed?

Plot
Our protagonist, Kat Parker, is spending a week visiting her uncle, Victor Frankenstein (pronounced Fron-ken-shteen, probably). The original Frankenstein is even Dr Frankenstein's great grandfather, despite the fact that the original story is set in the 1830s, so there's a bit of a generation gap here. After getting off the bus and asking a villager for directions, Kat is given the ol' "don't go near the castle" schtick, causing a crowd of angry villagers to surround her and say "Sod off." Then, the Romanian Beymer twins attempt to beat her up, but she's saved by a guy named Robby, who's been sent by Dr Frankenstein to pick her up and call out the entire village on acting menacingly to a 12 year old girl who's just popped over here on holiday just because her uncle has the same name as a fictional scientist who built a monster for the good of science, and nothing more. That being said, I could see that being a tad more reasonable if we're talking  about the Peter Cushing Frankenstein.

Robby drops Kat off at Castle Frankenstein, where Dr F. greets her warmly. We're then introduced to the titular hound, Poochie. Dr Frankenstein takes Kat to his lab, to introduce her to his latest creation, Frank. Frank is not a monster per say, but rather a robot with it's own artificial intelligence. OK, there's nothing morally wrong with that for the villagers to get mad over (though I can't say the same ethically). In fact, Dr Frankenstein mentions that he doesn't know everything it's able to do. Get the duct tape, folks, because at least one of Asimov's laws is getting broken today!

Later, Robby pops over to see Kat, and they explore the castle together. For whatever reason, they decide to look around the lab, and Kat shows Frank to Robby. Robby asks her to turn on the Asimov's-Law-Breaking robot, and summons the almighty power of peer pressure to make her switch Frank on. Frank immediately darts off out the lab and off into the street. Luckily, Dr Frankenstein's guard dogs scare Frank back towards the house, and they carry him in after forgetting that a handle and hinges on the outside of a door typically means that you pull to open.

Back at the lab, Robby and Kat dump Frank back in his place, accidentally knocking a container of green stuff all over Poochie, making him grow enourmous. They manage to clean him up, but then we discover that, despite the fact that the house was empty, her phone has been smashed by forces unseen. Probably the astral projection of my slightly cuckoo deputy headmaster.

That night, a shadowy figure appears at Kat's door, ominously telling her that he's Victor Frankenstein. Wait, didn't we already do this in Who's Your Mummy? So, Dr Frankenstein shows up and switches him off. Luckily, it was just a robot with a malfunctioning brain that he never got rid of or restrained or anything like that.

Robby comes round again, and, since Dr Frankenstein's out for the day, he and Kat decide to roll for initiative and investigate the lab. They encounter Frank, who all but explicitly reveals that he was the other Dr Frankenstein from last night. OK, that's actually pretty good. He grabs Kat, so Robby headbutts him, causing him to topple over in shock. He gets back up and says that, because Dr Frankenstein has given him the power to break Asimov's laws, and he's just done so (Ha! Called it!), he must destroy them. Kat grabs the beaker of gunk that turned Poochie huge, and pours it over herself. However, nothing happens. Because it was actually soap. Luckily, Dr Frankenstein gets back and switches Frank off. Yep, because he's such a vain moron, he'd copied his brain patterns to create Franks' AI, but didn't edit them enough, so Frank has a bit of an identity crisis.

Dr Frankenstein takes Kat to a room full of monitors, and explains that he's been monitoring everything that's been going on since Kat got here. Then he reveals that he's going to copy Kat's brain patterns and put them in a new robot. Then he reveals that he's drugged his own niece, knocking her out. Uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh...........

Kat wakes up, about to have her brain copied. Suddenly, another Dr Frankenstein bursts out of a cupboard, claiming that he's the real deal. The 2 Dr Frankensteins get into an argument, when Poochie (oh yeah, he's in this story) shows up, and nuzzles up to the original Dr Frankenstein, seemingly as if to say 'this is the real one.' I say "seemingly," because after they shove the second Dr Frankenstein back into the cupboard, Poochie pulls up Dr Frankenstein's trouser leg, revealing the off switch. Realising what's happened, Kat switches him off, and opens the cupboard... to find a dozen more Dr Frankensteins. What. Then, yet another Dr Frankenstein shows up (there is way more Frankenstein than dog in this story) revealing that he's been on holiday in France the entire time, and that Kat was supposed to come over next week. The end. Yeah, things just grind to a halt after that.

Extra Toppings
As the story grinds to a halt, Dr Frankenstein shows Kat a room full of cloned Poochies. Hey, we've only got about 4 characters in this story, might as well make a ton more of them.

Any Questions?
Was there any point in naming this story Frankenstein's Dog? Like, at all? It sounds like an off-brand Frankenstein's Cat.
Why did the villagers hate Dr Frankenstein? Was it just because his name was Victor Frankenstein? Is this story set in southern America or something?

Conclusion
Frankenstein's Dog starts off pretty well, but quickly devolves into complete incomprehensible insanity. The whole AI robot thing was pretty cool, but when it just goes into the whole "creator replaced by creation" schtick, I lost interest. Overall, very anticlimactic.
